The Small Things in Life

18 Dec

This holiday I intend to celebrate the small things in life as well as the really big ones like loving family and friends. The list may be long but it will be simple without any priority in the order.  It is just things that come to mind randomly. Let me know if you need more details. I reserve the right to add to the list in the future.

  1. Running water in the kitchen. We have a sink, a faucet and a drain. Everything functions as designed!
  2. A plumber who who can be available within 3 days install sink, a faucet and a drain. Bathroom will be next.
  3. Ice and filtered water in the frig door. Used the filtered water for the coffee this AM. Really do need better coffee but it is a start. We can also just drink the water – nice change.
  4. Two electricians last week so we have two rooms with all new wiring and functional fan lights.
  5. Two electricians scheduled for later this week. Should have two more fan lights and a 3 way switch in the hallway and maybe even new kitchen lights..
  6. Football playing twin brothers who happily carried the treadmill out of the house into the “man cave.” They wanted to know what else we needed while they were here.
  7. Football playing twin brothers who will move the table saw from the leaky metal shed to the man cave as well. It is even heavier than the treadmill.
  8. A neighbor who commented on the red cushions on the wicker and rockers on the front porch. She is also supportive of my “show and tell” whenever we have completed something on the house remodel.
  9. Rocking chairs on the front porch where we can sit to enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
  10. Frequent warm evenings so we can sit in the rocking chairs.
  11. Snug replacement windows. They are light and bright with no drafts. They even look good from inside or out. The streaks and smudges will just be considered battle scars until later.
  12. New windows so we can actually see out when it is too cool to enjoy the sunset from the front porch.
  13. A large back yard for dog walking 3 -4 times per day without having to drive anywhere. The dog can run free to pick up sticks to carry like flags or to turn sideways somersaults just because he can. We work on our 10,000 steps per day.
  14. Textbook editors who think a retired college instructor is a good choice to author instructor manuals and review new books. It won’t make me independently wealthy but will give me new projects for a new year.
  15. A dear friend who introduced me to Skype which allows me to stay connected to friends and family. Had a really nice chat yesterday with older son and 2 of his daughters. Now if I can just get a few more friends and family to remember to connect, we won’t feel quite so far away. Who wants to chat?

That’s a lovely list of things to be thankful for. Functional plumbing and good neighbors certainly are cause for rejoicing. Congratulations on the textbook deal.

It does sound a lot like a Thanksgiving list but I can only write what and when the thoughts wander through my brain. I tried making notes of ideas but that hasn’t worked very well so far. I do better when I just sit down and write.
