Morning Noise

5 Aug

One of the comforting things about RV traveling are the signs stating the “quiet hours” which are usually 10 pm to 8 am. Those individuals who want to hit the road early are able to breakdown their equipment very quietly. There is rarely any banging or clanging. I may not be hitting the road at 5 am but I am usually up making coffee around that time so I’m aware of the lack of noise.

Many cities have similar quiet hours. I’ve encountered them most often posted on building permits. No one wants to hear the sound of hammering or nail guns at 6 am. Neighbors also respect similar rules for grass cutting and weed eaters.

We live in a small town (maybe 1500) which probably has noise laws. I don’t remember seeing that on our building permit for the man cave but it might have been there. The neighborhood noise time, however, is 7 am not 8. I was originally a little surprised to hear the start of lawn mowers or the nail gun at the new house construction down the street promptly at 7 on a Saturday morning. I have consistently waited until after 8 but this week it finally dawned on me why 7 was considered acceptable. Most of the yards surrounding us are on double lots that take a good 3 hours to cut and trim. By 11 am, it would be uncomfortably hot to be working hard. Between 7 and 10 am, the yard could be put into top shape and enjoyed from the patio with a co0l drink before the heat sets in.

We will be starting a new construction project in this next week. It is finally time to add the bump out for the laundry closet off the family room. I’ll be ready to start by 7 am. The only “neighbor” I’ll may disturb will be my husband who like to stay up later and sleep in until at least 7:30. Is disturbing him a bad thing?

The condo we just moved from had 10:00 PM to 7:30 AM quiet times. Yet we still had little old ladies complaining at the board meetings about showers running at 6:00AM. At least the board explained–every month–about how some people worked for a living!

And now you can focus on working when you want rather than to someone’s pick for a schedule! Most days I shower mid afternoon after dirty outside jobs have ended and before I start on inside things.
